One good feature I found in the Placentia library website is that it has a link that lists all the local churches, schools, and colleges in that area, which is pretty helpful for people new to that place. But I would like to see the website having more advanced feature, like subscribing to rss feeds to all the local newspapers to keep the users posted about the latest happenings, also the children’s page could be more colorful with some cool graphics and may be some podcasts of fun children’s picture books! The main page layout is pretty simple and is very easy to navigate, which leaves ample scope for incorporating new features into the library’s website.

The Placentia library’s website differs from Facebook, Myspace etc. in the sense that while these are interactive social networking websites, the purpose of the library’s website is to communicate and promote the events and programs of the library to its users in the community, it is one-sided and not interactive in the sense those social networking websites are.

Folksonomies and tagging

Folksonomies are freely chosen words, usually generated by the user. In institutionalized catalog, the search terms are chosen by experts and indexers who have extensive knowledge about the subject matter, but the user created keywords are often ambigous, inaccurate and fail to yield the most effective search results many a times. User submitted tags are more open and successful in pulling out resources from networks for the purpose of socializing and photo sharing like Flickr and Del.icio.ous, but in the case of library resources or archives, controlled vocabulary would work much better.

FPL Blog

FPL has a blog for Young Adults, and it is mantained and updated regulary. There seems to be some flaws in the arrangement of the webpage, but the library has started using the tool pretty recently, so hopefully they will work on improving the blog. Also, the it allows comments, and there is a link to Myspace, but it doesn’t have the IM feature yet. The Adult Reference Librarian regularly maintains and posts about the recent happenings at the library. The blog can be accessed at http://www.fullertonlibrary.org/yablog/index.php.

Chicken quesadillas

6	oz refrigerated cooked Southwest-flavor chicken breast strips (from 9- or 12-oz package)
1/2	cup Old El Paso® Thick ‘n Chunky salsa
1	package (11.5 oz) Old El Paso® flour tortillas for burritos (eight 8-inch tortillas)
	Cooking spray
2	cups finely shredded Colby-Monterey Jack cheese blend (8 oz)
1/4	cup sour cream

1.	Cut chicken into bite-size pieces. In small bowl, mix chicken and salsa.
2.	Spray 1 side of 1 tortilla with cooking spray; place sprayed side down in 10-inch nonstick skillet. Layer with one-fourth of the chicken mixture and 1/2 cup of the cheese. Top with another tortilla; spray top of tortilla with cooking spray.
3.	Cook uncovered over medium heat 4 to 6 minutes, carefully turning after 2 minutes, until golden brown. Repeat with remaining tortillas, chicken mixture and cheese. To serve, cut quesadillas into wedges. Serve with sour cream and, if desired, additional salsa.

I found this Betty Crocker recipe, and tried this, it is really gooood.

Gardening

hmm….Just when the eggplants and tomatoes and chillies began to grow, some unknown creature started taking interest in my small garden and feast on the produces in the darkness of the night. I am trying to trace the culprit, may be a cat or a raccoon, who knows, but i will not let anything dampen my gardening spirit so easily.

Hurricane Ike

It is extremely unnerving to see the damages done by Hurricane ike. I can imagine the difficulty the texans will have to go through for the next couple of weeks at least.
